Taken from TF Culhane letters

After the battle of Kinsale the knight and his wife and family fled to Kerry and stayed with the Fitzmaurices of Lixnaw. There they were nearly captured by the Listowel garrison. They then retired to the fastness of Brosna, where many good friends guarded them zealously until the knight's estates were restored to him in 1603.

Eamann na gCath was succeeded by his son Tomas Spainneach, who with the sons of other Irish chieftains was at school at Compostella. This man played no part in the wars that followed 1641 because of ill-health. There was very little tradition about him, but the state papers and other historical sources tell us a great deal about him and about his nephew, Gearoid na gCapall, who succeeded him. This material will be dealt in a history of Glin parish, as I am only concerned with traditional matter here. Although Tomas Spainneach was an innocent man his estates were confiscated and given to Barker. Several other claimants tried to get them but they eventually were given to Gearoid na gCapall. This man was the son of John FitzGerald and Honoria O'Connor, a daughter of Sean Cathach, the O'Connor Kerry, who died in 1640.

Three of Gearoid's brothers perished in the Cromwellian wars. One of them, Sean Og, married a Miss Hickey of Dunmoylan. His descendants were known as the Ridire FitzGeralds. The Glin branch of this family became known as the Regan FitzGeralds, as one of them married a relative of Tim Regan of Ardagh, well-known Irish scribe and teacher. Margaret FitzGerald (Mrs. John Dillon) is now the last survivor of this ancient family

Fíorchaoin fáilte go Áth an tSléibhe. Welcome to Athea, a very proud village in West Limerick nestled under the rolling hills of the Dromada Ridge between Listowel, Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Glin. St. Bartholomew's Church was built by Fr. John Ryan in 1832 on a site donated by Thomas Goold. It is Gothic in style with its high pitched roof and tall elegant windows. In 1862, Fr. Martin Ryan consecrated, remodelled and enlarged the church at a cost of £650 and also installed a bell. Fr George Quain added a spire to the church in 1905 and a new bell. The entire church was renovated in 1986/87 by Fr Thomas O'Donnell P.P. and was completed by Fr. Patrick Kelly P.P. It was rededicated on October 18th 1987 by Bishop of Limerick Jeremiah Newman.   Canon Tony Mullins 087 2600414 Pastoral Council - Siobhán Barrett - 087 3331459

Chris Robertson- Hello Moyvane!

I am looking for some genealogy assistance with the Mulvihill’s (Mulville). My wife and I met several wonderful people and the Pastor when we visited Moyvane in August of 2017 as our daughter was the 2017 Washington DC Rose of Tralee and we were in Tralee for the festival.

We are looking for relatives of Michael Mulvihill and Honora Mullins who were pioneer settler of Newton (Sandes?) . They had a son Timothy, born 1831 who came to America in 1853 via Canada. They also had a son John ( my direct line), who was born around 1814 and ended up in Edina Missouri, USA and died in 1895. He was married to Margaret Roach from County Limerick. We don’t know if they were married when the immigrated to the US. We have hit a brick wall in getting past this point. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

RELATIONS 1

RELATIONS: Trying to track down some more of my grandfather, Timothy Lyons, Moyvane roots. His mom was Margaret (Maggie)Connell, she was born in 1866 in Keloid, and went to the US & met & married Thomas Lyons, from Ballygarrett, Lixnaw in 1892 in NYC...She had 2 sons, my grandfater Timothy & his older brother Tom. She died when Tim was quite young and then is father died a few years later...He had an aunt on his fathers side who brought the boys both back to his uncle Daniel Lyons farm in Ballygarrett, where he grew up (his older brother died shortly after their return of TB)His grandparents would be Timothy Connell & Mary Fitzgibbons, and as far as we can tell didn't really know their daughter's children. They were married in 1864 in Keloid, Moyvane and we think Mary was born Jan 27,1841 in Dirrigalun, Dromtariffe. We are trying to figure out her parents, maybe Thomas & Julia Fitzgibbons (nee Brien), her siblings Thomas 1843 & Honora or Ellen 1847...Any additional information or local family connections as to where they might be buried etc would be great...We are currenlty in Ballybunion for a few months & would love to track some of this down while we are here. We met Julia @ Mail Cross Garden Centre while buying some plants and she is trying to point me in the right direction, but any advice would be much appreciated .

I am Terry, descended from Bryan McMahon b. 1831 or 1837 who came to New Zealand circa 1855, and married Margaret Devane in Australia on Dec 17, 1866. Bryan had brothers Patrick, John and Owen, and daughter Ellena b. Jan 13, 1839 and another daughter. John m. Ellen Tangnay on May 22, 1864. All are believed to have left Co. Kerry (Molahiffe, Mile Height or Ballyseedy areas), some to the USA and some to Australia for the gold rushes. Bryan's father was Thade (Timothy) who m. Margaret Hannafin. He had brothers Jermiah (Darby) who d. April 16, 1857, and who m. Mary Murphy who d. Jan 31, 1878; Terence who m. Johanna Murphy Jul 14, 1839; Owen who m. Catherine O'Sullivan; Denis; Brian who m. Catherine Enright; Charles who m. Ellen O'Sullivan and Daniel. Their father was Terence who m. Margaret Moriarty and he d. Dec 10, 1840. His brothers were John who m. ? Flynn; Owen who m. Nora Stack in 1810; and Timothy who was a half-brother. Their father was Darby (we believe it could have been Dairmaird or Jeremiah) who d. 1778 and who m. firstly M. O'Sullivan the mother of Timothy; darby m. secondly Eleanor O'Mahony who was mother to the other three. Darby had 9 sisters whose details are not known. Darby's father was John McMahon who m. Catherine Moriarty. John's brothers were Brian, Jeremiah, Timothy and Terence. John would have been b. circa 1710. His father was Terence who was b. circa 1680. We believe he was one of four brothers who came to Co. Kerry from Co. Clare, and he settled in Molahiffe. Two of the others are believed to have gone, one to Knockanure (north of Listowel in Co. Kerry) and one to Kilmoiley. A fourth went to Co. Limerick, where one line included the French connection through Jean-Baptiste de MacMahon (John MacMahon) b. 1715. Terence stayed in the Molahiffe area, and his grandson Darby (and probably Terence and his son also) are buried in the ruins of the old Molahiffe abbey near the church at Fieries.

Someone in the area may have better knowledge of the graves and their inscriptions. We would dearly like to hear from anyone with this knowledge. We would also like to hear from anyone with any interest in any of the people mentioned above. Unfortunately the older records in the Molahiffe parish were destroyed by fire, but the family were Catholics, and leased land for potato farming. Terence's G/G/Grandson Jeremiah (Darby) leased land at Bushmount off Daniel C. Coltsman, and Jeremiah himself sublet land to Timothy Cahill. This was in 1853.

Please send all information/inquiries to me at larmac@xtra.co.nz and we can swap information. We believe we came from the Co. Clare MacMahon/McMahon family who descended from the O'Brien Kings from Brian Boru.

My husband's line is through Edmund Dinneen and Honora Lyons Stack Dinneen (via their daughter Deborah Zita Dinneen Moloney). Edmund and Michael were brothers. Edmund came to USA about 1864, settled in Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois and died there 1903. Michael came to the US in 1864, don't know when Michael died. Michael and his wife (Mary) Ellen had 6 boys. Three went to Ogdenburg, St. Lawrence County, NY. I know of two other Dinneen brothers, a Patrick and a Daniel. Patrick is buried in Ireland and Daniel also came to Ottawa, IL. I have a photograph of the headstone of the parents, Timothy Dinneen and Catherine Walsh from Knockanure Churchyard, Knockanure, County Kerry Ireland. Best Regards, Victoria Moloney

LGA 1813 3 23 NPM By the Rev Mr ELLARD, at Kilmallock church, Maurice Creed PARKER, of Hermsbrook, Esq to Eliza, third daughter of the late James WALL, of Kilbaha, county Kerry, Esq.

This James WALL was a landlord in Kilbaha, Co. Kerry, just across the border from Limerick. He was murdered by the Whiteboys in 1808. His Daughter Eliza getting married in Kilmallock would seem to suggest some sort of family relationship with the Kilmallock WALLS.

WALL. KEP, 10 March 1860, 4 Nov. 1808. Murder of James Wall/sentencing of John Neil to hang, Jan. 1809 Special Commission. 'Mr. Wall was a respectable gentleman, residing near Newtownsandes ...'. 'opposite the gaol'. More than four years later, the Knight of Kerry noted that Timothy Mulvihill, the principal suspect, was still at large (National Archives of Ireland, SOC 1532/22.Ballinruddery, Listowel, 30 Sept. 1813, Maurice Fitzgerald to Robert Peel); apprehension of Timothy Mulvihill reported in The Limerick General Advertiser of 31 May 1814 'at Knockanure by the spirited and judicious exertions of John Sandes, Esq ... aided by a party of the Waterford Militia'.

Thank you. That is incredible. I think I found the marriage record for Jeremiah Enright and Johanna Kennelly in 1870 in Knockanure. There was a blurb online but nothing concrete, like what you just sent. As far as Bridget Lacey, I am not sure where she was born. I can't find her immigration to the US either. She, supposedly, came over as a servant or was a servant once she got here. Family (my sister-in-law's family) said she came through Ellis Island but I can find nothing on her. In the census she stated she was naturalized and nothing there either.

Is it possible to send for copies of any of the records you sent over?

Thanks again.

hi

im looking for relatives of timothy Fitzgerald born 9 may 1885 in Glensharrold, Ardagh, Co limerick Ireland. his father was john Fitzgerald who died in march 1916, his mother was Catherine Leahy from Knockanure, Listowel, Co Kerry who died in Dec 1938. 4) Catherine born march 1889 died march 1964, she married Daniel Mahony (Garrett was his brother)

I think that Timothy married a violet Whaley on 29 Jun 1918 at Anaconda, Deerlodge, Montana, USA. Violet was born 1885 in Shellmouth, Montana. her father was Matthew Whaley and her mother was Mary Switzer.

there is loads of Irish relatives waiting to meet up and have the craic.

O KEEFFE: Father Eoghan (Owen) O'Keefe (1656 - 1726) of Glenville, County Cork. He was a Gaelic poet of notable achievement who became president of the bards of North Cork. Following the death of his wife he entered the Church and was parish priest of Doneraile until his death. Many of the songs he composed are still sung in his native County Cork.

It is said that the famous Irish actor and dramatist John O'Keeffe was for a time known as John Keefe. He was born in Dublin in 1747 and was one of the most produced playwrights in London during the late 1700's. He died in 1833, leaving behind over fifty comedic works, including 'The Poor Soldier, 'Merry Sherwood' and 'Tony Lumpkin in Town'.

Constantine O'Keeffe (1672-1745) and General Patrick O'Keeffe (1740-1809) were both long serving officers in the Irish Brigade. Constantine O'Keeffe was admitted to the French aristocracy in 1740 on the basis of his long service and his Irish pedigree. The surname 'Cuif', found in the Champagne district of northern France, is descended from the O'Keeffe soldiers.

Born in Wisconsin, USA, to an Irish father, Georgia O'Keefe (1887-1986) was an outstanding artist of her generation. Her paintings showed her love for the American Southwest and the desert environment with its big colourful flowers and high rocky hills was the subject of many of her works. Her paintings are shown all over the world and more than one million people have visited the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in New Mexico since it opened in 1997.

Jer -

As far as I know, Johanna Kennelly of Newtownsandes (b. 1843?)
married Patrick Moore in Ireland. Their Children were Catherine,
Honorah Mary (my great-grandmother), Mary, Michael, and William.
Patrick Moore seems to have died in Ireland, whereupon the rest of
the family emigrated to the U.S. Here I have conflicting information
- it may have been 1872 or 1881, but the former is more likely. The
family came through Philadelphia and went to Pittsburgh, PA, later
moving to New York, which is where my family's from.

Does this sound like your Kennellys?

Fianna Fáil
The Republican Party

Eamon Kissane (1899-1979) was born at Moyvane, formerly Newtownsandes, in North County Kerry on January 4, 1899, the youngest of twelve children. His father James, was a farmer from Ballybunion, and his mother, Bridget, had also been from a farming family. Educated at the local national school, Eamon was expected to pursue a career as a farmer. However, like many young people at the time his life was changed by the events of the Easter Rising. From 1917 onwards he was active in Sinn Féin, the Gaelic League and subsequently the Irish Volunteers. Towards the end of 1920 he was co-opted to a vacant seat on Kerry County Council. He opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and supported those who took the Republican side during the Civil War. He was arrested and interned in The Curragh and Mountjoy Prison. He was released as part of the general release of prisoners in 1924.

He went back to the farm for a time but, as the language movement went into full swing again, worked as a full-time organiser and organised language classes in Wexford and Kilkenny where he was then working. During this time he joined Fianna Fáil and he stood for the party in the 1932 General Election in the constituency of Kerry, later Kerry North, being comfortably elected. In 1935 he married Dr. Anne Kehoe, then Medical Officer of New Ross in Wexford. After being elected a TD Kissane pursued a law course and was called to the Bar on June 29, 1938. He practised on the Eastern Circuit before being appointed a Parliamentary Secretary in February 1943 to the Minister for Lands with special responsibility for the Gaeltacht Services. Following the 1943 General Election he became Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach and to the Minister for Defence. He was also the Government Chief Whip at this time and maintained these roles until Fianna Fáil lost power in 1948. At this time he was also elected to the Fianna Fáil Ard Chomhairle.

Kissane lost his Dáil seat at the 1951 General Election and failed to regain it in 1954. He was nominated to the Seanad by de Valera in 1951 as one of his nominees of that year. He was elected on the Cultural and Educational Panel in 1954 and retained his seat until his retirement from politics in 1965. Eamon Kissane died on May 20, 1979.

Here is an excerpt from a letter received by my great-grandmother Hannah Dissett:

May 11th 1930

My Dear Cousin Hannah -

I received Your Most Welcome Letter which came as a pleasant surprise to me. If Mother was living she would be Charmed. Mother was a daughter of Micheal Dissette Carrigafoyle & had an Uncle Edward Dissette & a Grandfather Micheal - our Great Grand Father. She spoke always about her people that went out to Canada & How they had to go in those days in sailing ships. Ballylongford is one mile from Carrigafoyle that's our nerest Village.

Oh how I wish you could visit us to drink the Spring water from Dissette's Well, your Great-Grandfather's. It's a few minutes walk from my cottage, the people owns the Farm now there names are Buckleys. Grandfather's House isent there any more But you can see where it was & this Well the people call it Dissette's Well - it's 200 years old.

With best love to all your Family I remain Your

Loving Cousin

Mrs. Patrick Walsh

Carrig Bridge, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry Ireland

(Her full name was Mary Dissett Heffernan Walsh)

On the Discovery Series map of the Ballylongford area Carrig Bridge can be seen at a little crossroad just just one mile north of Ballylongford, southeast of Carrigafoyle and directly east of Martara. Another little north-south trail appears to divide Carrigafoyle in half just the way it was described in my g-g-grandfather's memoir. At the end of that little road is a well. I wonder if it could not be the same one described by Mary Walsh?

That Dear Little Town Newtownsandes
by Frank Thornton, 1930

Away back in Kerry in a place I know well
in a cute littel corner overlooking the land
Is a quaint little town and I heard people tell
Why they called it that Dear Little Town Newtownsandes.

Each letter has formed a part of its name
And I want to tell for what each letter stands
Then put them together and you'll think the same
Why they called it That Dear Little Town Newtownsandes.

N Meaning no place as dear to your heart
E Stands for ever so faithful and grand
W For wishes when far, far apart
T For that Dear Little Town Newtownsandes
O For old friends who are thoughtful and kind
W For workers of that old native land
N Meaning neighbors that only you'll find in the midst of That Dear Little Town Newtownsandes
S Is for sons of that great Irish race
A For ancestors who are long past and gone
N For the names of who first built the place and called it
That Dear Little Town Newtownsandes.
D for the daughters of long standing fame
E For endeavors to bring peace to the land
S For the sound of that glorious name,
That Dear Little Town Newtownsandes.

Frank Thornton wrote many songs including.

Memories of Music

There's a sound in the shore I can hear more and more
Where my thoughts in fond memory abide
It comes from the tune of an Irish Gorsoon
As he plays by the dear Shannon side.

The sound of the flute takes me back to my youth
To the days and the nights so sublime
With Old Ireland in tune 'neath a bright Irish moon
Where the fun that was yours was mine.

There a lad from listowel played with heart and with soul
On his violin soothing and sweet
White Ted from Tralee with accordion on knee
Kept time with the beat of his feet.

How the piper from Strand would blend with the band
And the drummer roll off every note
And the dancers would say, please play until day
As each fellow discarded his coat.

The Garden of Daisies, The King of the Fairies,
The Blackbird and Travellers Reel
The Humors of Bandon played by Paddy Cronin
The Thousane tune boy from the Feal.

The music and laughter would linger long after
We each hite the road to our home
And there in our way to each other we'd say
Keep this music alive where we roam.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ireland

Such fields of green you have never seen
Or such music played in better tone
And the kind of friends that know no end
To make you feel so much at home

Such a pleasant place on this earth's face
Where there is no worry about time of day
And the men at night by the fireside bright
Tell funny tales in their winning way

Yes, in Ireland it is truly grand
To roam the roads and to view the scenes
And the stars at night in their pure delight
Play hide and seek with the moon's bright beams

You'll find fun galore, yes, and all the more
At ceilis, concerts and fleadh cheoils
So the thing to do for a month or two
Is to visit Ireland and such sights behold.

Match 1 from 'Department of the Taoiseach' Description: Letter to TC Courtney, Chief Engineering Adviser, Department of Local Government and Public Health, from Michael Keane and Sean J Scully, Joint Secretaries, Listowel Parish Relief Committee, 18 November 1941. They enclose a copy of statements of loss and damage incurred during the recent flooding of the parish. For example, Mrs Ellen Buckley, Pollough, Listowel, is an old age pensioner on 10/- per week. She has 21 statute acres at a Poor Law Valuation of £14. She has no stock and has her land let to John Lynch at a rent of £34 out of which she has to pay rent to the Irish Land Commission at £9 and rates of £7. Her dwelling house was brought down by the flooding and she is living with Mrs Kennelly. The statement indicates that she has no chance of returning home. Two tons of potatoes belonging to her were covered with water, thirty hens were drowned and 20 horse rails of turf were damaged.

Match 2 from 'Department of the Taoiseach' Description: Report of the Commission on Youth Unemployment, 1951. The terms of reference of the Commission are outlined on page 1 of the report. 'To examine and report on the extent and causes of unemployment amongst young persons of school-leaving age and under 20 years, and, having regard to social, economic and financial considerations, to make recommendations as to the most practicable and desirable measures to prevent and remedy such unemployment'.

Miss Brigid Stafford, Department of Industry and Commerce; Mrs Agnes Ryan; Miss K O'Sullivan; Miss Helena Molony and Miss Louie Bennett were all members of the Commission at various times.

Amongst other topics, the Commission examined the following areas: the extent, causes and remedies of youth unemployment; the school-leaving age; the training and education of young people; vocational guidance and the general welfare of young people. Throughout the report figures and statistics are given for both males and females.

Pages 5 to 13, examine the extent of youth unemployment. Tables indicate the area and age distribution of persons unoccupied. A table on page 9 of the report outlines the ages and sex of the unoccupied young persons in the County Borough of Dublin between the years 1936 and 1946. 'The most striking feature of these tables is that females outnumber males by nearly two to one. It seems probable that a high proportion of the 12225 females, 8686 of whom are under 18 years of age, are members of families whose circumstances are such that it is not imperative for the girls to seek employment, or, if they do want it, they are prepared only to consider work which is congenial to them'.

Page 28, includes several paragraphs on the subject of domestic science. 'Furthermore, Domestic Science helps to train a girl for her natural vocation - the care and management of a home and children'.

The Commission also examined the conditions of employment for young people. Domestic working conditions are highlighted on page 40. 'Over one third (23621) of all occupied girls under twenty and somewhat less than one quarter of all employed women (78522) are according to the Census of Population, 1946, employed as domestic workers. Domestic service is by far the most important single avenue of employment for women in this country. From the evidence we have received it is also, in many respects, the most unsatisfactory'. The conditions of domestic employment are examined in detail.

Amongst the recommendations in the section on juvenile delinquency, the Commission advocates that women be included on the staff of industrial schools catering for boys in order to make up for the lack of family atmosphere in these institutions.

A statement by Miss Louis Bennett regarding her refusal to sign the report is attached. In this statement she outlines her difficulties with the Commission's recommendations in relation to employment for girls, the Council of Education and the Scheme of Vocational Guidance. 'From my experience of girl workers I am obliged to assert that the Report shows little understanding of the modern girl. Nor does it draw attention to the very serious national problem raised by the exodus of girls to seek employment in other countries. John Moriarty -
The Mangerton Shaman
By Tony Bailie
With a shock of white hair, ancient lived in eyes and a mildly eccentric dress sense, John Moriarty is someone who causes people to do a double take as he passes by. He exudes an easy going and unselfconscious charm which enthrals the waitresses in the restaurant where we sit down to eat and they seem to squabble over who is going to serve him.
Our conversation is an almost hypnotic experience as Moriarty intones his sentences in a rich north Kerry accent, repeating key phrases two or three times to milk the full impact of the point he wants to make, almost as if he is mimicking the chanting shamans who dominate so much of his writing.

He has published five books drawing liberally upon the legends of Ireland, classical Greece, American Indians, Australian Aborigines, Ancient Egypt, Islam, Asia and the Christian Gospels to try and articulate the inner most mysteries of human consciousness.

His most recent book Nostos, published in March 2001, is a huge sprawling volume of autobiography containing nearly 700 pages of tightly crammed text, with no chapter breaks, setting out many of the ideas that he had already articulated in his previous books, but in a ``biographical context.''

He was born in Moyvane in 1938, educated at University College Dublin, lectured English Literature in Canada for six years before dropping out of academia to live in Connemara where he worked as a gardener.

DOODY

Im in Australia researching my Direct Line of DOODY, That came here in 1882 from Listowel Co Kerry
My Great Grandfather JOHN THOMAS DOODY Born circa 1860, and his Sister MARY JOSEPHINE DOODY, Born circa 1864
I realise i may not be able to Find John thomas Doodys birth, as registration didnt begin till 1864 in Ireland...They Both Catholics
But im wondering if some kind person may have access to either Co Kerry records or Irish Baptisms around 1864, that they could do a lookup for me please with MARY JOSEPHINE DOODYS Birth, with Sister being MARY
Apparently JOHN THOMAS DOODY was second son of Thomas Doody of Listowel Co Kerry according to a Newspaper article here re his Marriage
Thankyou
Regards from Australia

MAHONY

From: Katie < kateinthekitchen@yahoo.com>
Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Mahoney
Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2007 09:55:27 -0700 (PDT)
hello.
I'm stumped and don't know where to go from here in my research. I'll tell you what I have and if anyone could "tell me where to go" ;) from here that would be great.

I'm trying to find information on my great-grandfather, Maurice Mahoney, b. Oct 17, 1873, rumored possibly in Kerry.
I know he married Margaret Connor in Winchendon, MA 1904, at 25 years of age
From that certificate I know that his parents were James and Bridget (Enright) Mahoney, both born in Ireland.
(Margaret Connor, b. 1882 Winchendon, MA dau. of Patrick and Ellen (Cahill) Connor--but that's another posting ;) )

On familysearch.org, I found an Edward Mahoney, also in Winchendon, (m. 1898, d. 1903), with the same parents' names. Winchendon is a small town *now*, so I find it hard to imagine that there would be two men in that town at the same time with the same parents names.. unless they were brothers.

On Ancestry.com I found a Maurice "Mahony" that emmigrated to Winchendon, in 1902, at 23 years of age, to visit his sister "Annie" on Cross St. (This would be the right age to have married Margaret at 25 two years later. ) And the 1900 Winchendon census lists a child of Edward and Minnie as "Annie". It also says that the "place of last residence" was "Newtownsande". Is that a town in Kerry?

Thanks to help from good folks on another list, I have Maurice's draft card, and cencus listings for 1910, 1920, and 1930. The 1930 census has a "2" in a circle under the colum headed "year of immigration to the United States". This could be 1902- which makes me suspect the passanger list I found is the right person.

I don't know where to go from here to find any more information on Maurice. I don't know if James and Bridget ever emmigrated. I was hoping to find a birth certificate for Maurice.

Any help would be great. Unfortunately, I work *a lot* (and far away from a computer), and cannot spend nearly as much time on this as I would like.
thanks,
Katie

Mulvihill

I have a birth record for the above, born 21 July 1883 to John and Mary (Carmody) Mulvihill of the above town. Would be pleased to send it to a descendant.
Cheers,
Kay

I believe that I m related to the Relihans of Duagn Can you help? This is my connection. Any info helpful. Catherine A. Briggs, Portlnad, OR

Mary Relihan married Mortimer Daly,

They had 7 CHILDREN:

1. Patrick J. Daly b. Aug 21,1888 in Duagh, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry, died a Catholic Priest-Monsignoir in San Luis Obispo, California

2. John Daly who had at least 2 sons: Patrick Daly & Thomas Daly who were Catholic Priests

3. Thomas Daly who had at least 3 dtrs: Philomena who married a William Curtain, and a nun (name unkn), and a dtr named Mrs Michael Kennedy

4. Mortimer Jr. Daly, a Catholic Priest;

5. Nora Daly married to a Danaher, who had 4 children 3 sons and a dtrr: Timothy Danaher & Mortimer Leo Danaher are Catholic priests-Monsignoirs, Peggy Danaher married to Tom Stack, and Patrick Danaher.

6. Margaret Daly married to a Stanley

7. Mary Josephine a nun.

Sorry! I mixed generations in my previous message to you. My records indicate that Thomas Relihan, your great-grandfather, did indeed marry Mary Dillon upon his return to Ireland from the U.S. My records of their children include Catherine (m. Hartnett); Fr. Thomas (who died in 1935 in California); Ellen (m. Dillen); Mary (m Kelly); James; Margaret (m. Connell); John; and Michael (your grandfather) b.1890. Michael married Mary (sic) Bresnen (sic). They had eight children: Fr. Thomas Relihan, who was living in Susanville, California, in 1979; James; Michael; Daniel; Ellen (m. Bryan Gribbon/Gribben); Mary; Philomene (m. Michael Giles), and Catherine (m. Sean Downey).

I believe that your great-grandfather, Thomas Relihan, was the son of Michael Relihan and Catherine Hartnett, and a brother to my grandmother, Ellen Relihan, of Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. When Ellen, 18 in 1878, decided to go to California, her brother Thomas went with her as chaperone. Thomas worked in the gold mines of Nevada and on a "plantation" near Los Angeles before returning to Ireland. He married Mary Brosnan and had a son, Michael, known as "Mick the Yank" because his father had been to the U.S. My aunt and cousin visited them in 1937 in Duagh. I have a photo from that trip showing the Irish Relihans in front of the house where Ellen Relihan was born. I have more information, including Ellen's letters to her father, and will gladly share.
