Pat King June 2024
by Tom Aherne
COUNCIL ELECTION: The Limerick City and County Council Local Elections will be held on Friday June 7. A total of 12 candidates will contest for the 6 available seats with all the 6 sitting councillors all seeking re-election in the Newcastle West area. A local person Pat King from Carrigkerry will contest this area as an Independent Ireland candidate. He is the Supervisor of the Carrigkerry Athea and Old Mill community employment scheme and widely known in sporting circles. A past player with Villa Rovers, Old Mill and Carrig Celtic in soccer and St Kieran’s in football he is currently a Desmond League referee. He has been the driving force in committees in putting in place Carrig Celtic grounds, Carrigkerry Playground and presently Carrigkerry Sensory Garden.
Pat possesses a hard-working attitude who likes to get things done, rather that talking about getting things done. He has been disappointed by the lack of action from elected representatives and successive governments and feels it’s now time for new people and fresh ideas to step up and address the rural issues being ignored. Its Pat’s first time entering the political arena and his motto is the 3, C’s Choices, Chances and Changes. In life you must make the choice to take a chance if you want to make a change. His goals are simple and very achievable, and he is asking the general public to give him a chance to implement his ideas if elected. We wish him well in his quest to become a county councillor.

Thumb through the Family Album
Visitors, take a peek to see why you're lucky or unlucky that you didn't get our family's genes.
Michael Nash was born in County Limerick, Ireland circa 1807. He was a woodranger for Lord Monteagle at Mount Trenchard. He married Margaret Walsh 26/2/1843 in Foynes, County Limerick, Ireland. Sponsors: Lawrence Naish and Joanna Hayes.
In 1849, Michael Nash paid 3 men, Patrick Dempsey, Michael Culhane and John Hennesey to cause bodily harm to the steward of Lord Monteagle, Loughlin Sharpe. Loughlin Sharpe was paying the poor, on the public works projects, only a schilling a week and pocketing the rest of the money. This angered Michael.
The men met at Nolan's Pub in Newbridge and Michael paid them. They then proceeded to the house of Loughlin Sharpe where they cut off his ear and slit his achilles tendon.
All four men were sentenced to 7 years transportation. Here are the records of Michael Nash.
Michael Nash was convicted of a charge of malicious assault on 7/16/1849. His sentence was 7 years in the penal colony system. He was "transported" from Cohb (Cork), Ireland on the ship RODNEY on 12/20/1851. The Rodney weighed 877 tons and was built in Sunderland in 1850. The ship had 312 convicts on board. The ship's Master was Alex MacLean and the Surgeon was Harvey Morris. He sailed to Gibraltor, Spain, and spent 18 months there and then was transferred to the ship the Saint Vincent and was on the last boat of convicts to Hobart, Tasmania in 1853. The Saint Vincent dropped off 100 convicts in Gibraltor and picked up 102 convicts for the final voyage. The Saint Vincent was rigged as a ship of 633 tons, built in London in 1829. Her master was John Young and Surgeon Thomas Sommerville.

MORE NASH'S! Askeaton Abbey
THE NAISH VAULT IN ASKEATON ABBEY
The Naish vault in Askeaton Abbey refers to the Naish family of Ballycullen, Askeaton, County Limerick,Ireland. They were very large landowners in the area. The huge vault bears the inscription," In this ruined chapter room, the ancient and exclusive burial place of this family, this tomb was erected by Carroll Naish of Ballycullen Esq.& CO." The tomb commemorate's his wife who died in 1836. Her name was, Mary Sampson Naish. They had a daughter named Caroline Chr. 16/5/1832. Carroll Naish remarried after his wife's death to Ann Margaret O'Carroll. Their children were:
Secilia 1843
John 1841
Richard 1845
Frederick 1847
The Askeaton Abbey was founded in 1389 by the Fourth Earl of Desmond for the Conventual Franciscans. It was improved and enlarged by the 15th century and most of the surviving ruins date from then. In 1579, Sir Nicholas Malby sacked and burned the Abbey, killing many monks. The Franciscans returned in 1627 and restored the Abbey in 1643. The Abbey provides one of the finest examples of the ecclesiastical architecture of its period, the cloisters and the east windows being particularly notable and remarkably well preserved. The whole building is enclosed by a thick stone wall and down through the centuries burials have taken place within the Abbey and in the surrounding yard. Maybe Naish/Nash burials?

Additional Allotment, Listowel.
HC Deb 21 March 1910 vol 15 cc911-2W 911W
§ Mr. SHEEHAN
asked the Chief Secretary whether he can explain the circumstances under
which a labourer named O'Brien, of Knockundervaul, Duagh, rural district of
Listowel, was refused the additional half-acre; was the application of this
man twice inquired into; is he aware that at the inquiry in July, 1907, Mr.
M'Cabe, Local Government Board inspector, expressed himself in favour of it;
and that there is a sufficiency of land held by the occupier, Thomas Casey,
out of which an additional allotment might be granted?
§ Mr. BIRRELL:
I understand that O'Brien's application has been twice inquired into, but
there is nothing in the transcript of the shorthand writer's notes of the
second inquiry to show that the Board's inspector approved of the renewed
application, and he disallowed it on the ground that the applicant was not a
labourer. The area of the farm on which the additional half-acre was marked
appears to be forty-one acres, but the occupier based his objection upon the
fact that consent was given to the original half-acre for a cottage and plot
for O'Brien (although he was not an agricultural 912W labourer), on the
understanding that no more land would be applied for by him. The applicant
never worked as an agricultural labourer, but is a tailor.

Mary Spiesz, New York, USA.
I am searching for information about my maternal great-uncle, William Sullivan, better known as "Bill the Tailor", who married a girl from Abbeydorney and settled there. I was told he had a son who may still be alive in Abbeydorney. My great-uncle Bill was the son of James Sullivan of Barrow, Ardfert and Julia Savage, formerly of Listowel. Any help will be appreciated. I am also trying to locate information about my late maternal grandfather, Patrick Moriarty of Killorglin (born 1880's; died early 1900's in St. Catherine's Hospital, Tralee). His wife was my late, maternal grandmother from Barrow, Ardfert, Kerry. Her name was Mary Sullivan. Thank you for your help. E-Mail: McSpiesz@aol.com

Looking for lost relatives around Abbeydorney or someone that can steer me in the right direction to continue my search for my Abbeydorney family. My great-grandfather was Patrick J. Walsh, born in 1871 to Patrick and Ellen Delaney Walsh. Along with his brothers, Jeremiah and Daniel, he immigrated to Pittsburgh Pa. around 1890. All three were policemen in Pittsburgh. They left behind siblings, Maurice (Mossie) who married Nellie Hanlon, John, and a sister Nellie. On the 1901 census, this family was living in Ballymacquim East, Killahan, Abbeydorney. A 11 month old granddaughter, Mary Behane, was living with them as well as Ellen's mother, Johanna Delaney. Any assistance or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I will be happy to share the information that I have on this side of the ocean. Thanks and God bless. E-Mail: finola@sirinet.net

I am a great great granddaughter of Mary (Quinlan) Behane and Jeremiah Behane. Mary Behane, and later her son Maurice, owned a pub in Kilflyn which is now Parkers Bar. My great grandmother was Ellen Behane who married Martin Furlong - he was a policeman in Abbeydorney. They came out to New Zealand in 1865, leaving my grandmother Winifred Furlong with her aunt, Mary Shanahan , in Kilflyn I have Winifred's baptismal certificate from the Catholic Chirch of Kilflyn, 1864. Her sponsors were Patrick Furlong and Ellen Loughnane. She came to New Zealand in 1880. I have many letters and photographs of family in the area. The oldest letters are from Mary Shanahan, dating back to 1892. Later letters were from Winifred's cousin, Johanna King. I have made contact with some family connections in Ireland and have been able to share some of this material with them. Your site is excellent and I'll be following its development keenly.

Fred Shanahan Shannon from Grand Rapids, MINNESOTA, U.S.A.
O’Shanahan, Shanahan, Shannon ?? Great Grandpa’s name was O’Shanahan for sure. When he boarded the ship his birth record was a blur. Mishandling his papers was a bad habit he had. So reading his name was distressing and sad. The Ship’s Surgeon, a stern man with only one goal, Interrupted Gramp’s name without the front “O” Now this left a new handle for Gramp to support. To pass down to his kids with the first letter short. Things got too rough in the Canadian Woods, He packed up his family and their personal goods. Arriving in the States, he made one more mistake, He shortened it again for simplicity sake. O’Shanahan, Shanahan, Shannon, it’s all so confusing, Finding uncles and aunts with wrong names they are using. The reason for this is still a mystery to me. For this is not the name that planted our tree. This explains the trouble that’s beseeching me now. Tracking down a family who’s name changed somehow. The name O’Shanahan came straight from the sod. And Shanahan for sure was the name in the Log. Now this leaves only Shannon at the end of the road. And there are so many, that’s what I've been told. So I guess I’ll keep searching in hopes that I find, Another Shanahan, Shannon in the same state of mind.

I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your website. As I mentioned in your guestbook , my sister and I visited the Abbeydorney area last Fall. It is beautiful! I am from Wisconsin and my sister is from North Dakota in the United States. Both of our Great Grandparents came from The Abbeydorney area. The Sugrues were from Kilgulbin to be exact. My Great Grandmother, Catherine Sugrue, immigrated to the U.S. in 1861 with her Grandparents. She left behind her parents,William Sugrue and Joanna McCarthy and 10 siblings . She had only one brother, John. He had 10 Children, many whom, I believe, remained in the area.
My Great Grandfather, Timothy Laughlin, was from Kilflyn, born in the Parish of Abbeydorney. He came to the U.S. at the age of 10 with his father, Timothy Laughlin, and a brother, John. Through my research, I have been unable to locate any Laughlins in the Kilflyn area. I have found Loughnanes. Could this be the same family? If anyone has any information, I would surely appreciate a response. My GGGGrandfather, was also Timothy and he married Mary Flagherty, probably in the late 1700's. Thank you for the opportunity to include this in your website.

Got your URL from Fred Shannon ... my great great great grandfather, John HEALY was born 5/1/1797 in "O'Dorney, County Kerry", per his obituary; he died 4/20/1874, at the "Healy Settlement", Jackson Twp., Macon Co. Missouri USA. His wife's maiden name was Elizabeth SHANAHAN, no birth/marriage/death dates available, but family tradition says she passed away during the Famine. They had 7 known children ... the youngest, Daniel HEALY, was born October 26, 1845 in "Abdorna, Kerry"; the older six in were born "down the road" in Tralee. Would be very interested any info about the Descendants of Abbeydorney mentioned on the homepage, or in corresponding with anyone who may have info on my "people" in the area. Thanks, and God Bless!

Edit Your Page This home page is for the descendents of Patrick Culhane and Nora Enright Culhane, who were married, and lived on a dairy farm in Newtown Sandes (now Moyvane), County Kerry, Ireland. They had nine children, who were born in the mid-1800s. Many of their grandchildren emigrated to the United States, mostly to the Rochester, New York area, and other upstate New York towns.
This descendent profile was compiled by me, Dennis Culhane, of Rochester, New York, now living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I visited Ireland around August, 2000, and found the old farm and house where Patrick and Nora lived ("The Long House"). The Culhanes who currently live there (Sean and Maurice), and who were being visted at the time by their brother Pat and his wife Kathleen of Birmingham, England, provided some of the information contained here. They also provided me with a sheet of ancestry information compiled by Francis A. O'Connell, from which a good deal of this information came. Other information came from members of the O'Connor family (John and Padraig) who live nextdoor to Sean and Maurice. The O'Connors are descendents of John Culhane, one of Patrick and Nora's sons. Other information came from my father, Morris, of Rochester, and his brother, Robert, of New Ipswich, NH. This is definitely a work-in-progress, as there is a significant amount of unknown information, particularly birth and death dates, and even whole generations of children (Please forgive the usage of "Unkown" in the descendent report - it is not meant to imply that people were born or died "unknown" but that the DATE is "unknown.") If you have anything to add, including personal information, anecdotes, birth/death dates and locations, occupation, etc., please forward the information to me, and I will edit and update this site. Also, if you are in contact with other family members, please forward to them this website address.
I can attach images, photos, documents, etc. to this website as well, so, if you like, you can forward those to me, and I'll post them. I can return any paper documents you send me. If you have Family Tree Maker software, I can forward you an electronic copy of the entire family folder on which this family tree is based, and you can keep and update your own copy (I could email you the family tree file as an attachment).
Finally, send me an email if you are a member of this family, and would like to be notified of any updates to this site.
The Culhanes of Ireland and Rochester have not yet contemplated a reunion, but the creation of this descendents profile certainly suggests that we should have one. Suggestions...? Ideally it would be in Kerry, or we could try Rochester. Interested anyone?
