The marriage rate has come down 65% since 1970. There are multiple factors behind this decrease, but one of them is what we might call the poor branding that surrounds marriage in the modern day. From all corners of our culture and from both ends of the ideological spectrum come messages that marriage is an outdated institution, that it hinders financial success and personal fulfillment, and that it’s even unimportant when it comes to raising kids.

“Act on this word. If all you do is listen to it, you are deceiving yourselves. There is, on the other hand, the man who peers into freedom’s ideal law and abides by it. He is no forgetful listener, but one who carries out the law in practice. Blest will this man be in whatever he does.” (James 1:19-22, 25)
Visiting the elderly often seems like something we all talk about doing but never quite get around to finding the time for it. Many of us are aware that all the elderly want is even just a phone call. And yet this short weekly task falls by the wayside.

State entry of Ivor Guest, Lord Wimborne as Viceroy in Dublin during April of 1915. There he is looking at ease on his horse preceded by a Heraldic dignitary and surrounded by military officers. Apparently he had arrived in Ireland in February but was probably just "reading" himself into the role?

It was in the afternoon of the 14th. His Excellency had arrived at Kingstown at 1:30 p.m. and before he could get on his horse there was the matter of the royal salute (fired by torpedo boats), meeting dignitaries, speeches, luncheon (all still on board), then landing at 3 p.m. before the viceregal party could get on their train to Westland Row. Then after meeting railway officials and inspecting a guard of honour
Shortly afterwards Lord Wimborne came down the steps of the railway station and mounted his beautiful bay charger with the easy grace of a practised horseman. The waiting populace burst into round after round of cheers. He looked strikingly handsome as he handled hie prancing steed with one white-gloved hand, while with the other be doffed his hat to the salutes of .the people. A procession was formed and proceeded to the Castle ...
(Irish Independent - Thursday 15 April 1915)
So I'd guess it was about 4 p.m. on Wednesday 14th April 1915. (see below)
And the article also specifies the order of the procession. Ahead of the Lord Lieutenant was the Ulster King of Arms, and behind was the General Officer Commanding the Troops in Ireland.

The Late Canon Denis O'Mahony, Retired PP Castleisland
The death has occurred of Rev. Canon Denis O'Mahony, Killeagh, Farranfore, Co. Kerry, retired PP of Castleisland Parish.
Sadly missed by his brother Tony, sister Kathleen O'Donoghue, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, sisters in law, Bishop Ray Browne and the Priests of the Dioceses.
Rest in Peace.
AN ABSOLUTE GENTLEMAN
Canon O'Mahony (88) was described this morning as 'an absolute gentleman who had great time for people and a fantastic way with children.'
The description was provided by Nora Fealey who worked for most of a decade as a housekeeper with 'The Canon' and she credited him with many of the changes for the good during his time as parish priest in Castleisland.
LOCAL BOY WHO BECAME A PRIEST
Canon Denis O'Mahony took over the role from Canon Michael O'Herlihy when he retired in July 1990. At the same time Fr. Kieran O'Shea left Castleisland to become PP in Knocknagoshel.
“Canon O'Mahony was always the local boy who became a priest and he held a lifelong love of his local place in Farranfore.” said Nora.
“He will be remembered too as the first parish priest here to encourage female altar servers and he had a great and genuine interest in the welfare of people.
A MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS EVE
“A certain generation will never forget an incident from at least one Christmas of their childhood. During the 7pm Christmas Eve mass, Canon O'Mahony's phone rang on the altar beside him and he answered it.
“It was Santa and he wanted all the children of the parish to know he was on his way and that they should be in bed early.
VIVIDLY REMEMBERED
“There are now grown-ups in the area who vividly remember that and who talk about it still and the impact it had on them. He was a lovely man,” said Nora.
May God be good to him.
TOUGH COUPLE OF WEEKS
“It's a tough couple of weeks on the parish here at the moment. Fr. Willie Stack died just a couple of weeks ago, now Canon O'Mahony and Fr. Dan is retiring,” said Nora before turning her thoughts to Wednesday and embracing the change and welcoming the new PP, Fr. Maurice 'Mossie' Brick to Castleisland.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Dear Parishioner,
On this day, five years ago, the sad news of the death of Fr.
Pat Moore reached the ears of many people. (May 2 2017.) One cannot say that it was
unexpected, as he had suffered from oesophagal cancer for a lengthy period
before that. Fr. Pat was known far and wide, throughout the diocese and
further afield. A factor in his being seen and known all over the diocese
was that he was what was known as the Diocesan Examiner – the priest
who visited the primary schools of the diocese. When Fr. Pat was ordained
in 1982, I had spent the most part of a year in Kenya and after my return to
Ireland in the summer of 1987, I spent the months until a short time before
Christmas, doing a renewal course in Dublin.
After returning to the diocese, I probably met him at one of our diocesan
meetings, or on some other occasion between the start of 1988 and August
of that year, when I took up an appointment as a curate in Killarney Parish.
Fr. Bill Murphy (now our retired bishop) had been living with Fr. Pat in a
diocesan house in Ballycasheen. When he moved to the Presbytery in New
Street as Administrator of the Cathedral, I took up residence in his place.
We were to be together in Ballycasheen until the summer of 1993, when I
was transferred to Rathmore Parish. I did not expect that we would be
working in the one parish, but not living in the same house, when, in the
summer of 1994, Fr. Pat was also appointed to Rathmore Parish. I had
spent a year living in Knocknagree and he took up residence in the
Presbytery in Gneeveguilla. I left him in the parish, when I headed back to
Kenya, after a ten year stay in the diocese, in September 1997.
While many people were aware of the sickness that led to Fr. Pat’s death,
his earlier sickness, while in Rathmore Parish, might not be as well known.
Everybody who knew him was saddened, when they saw that, for some time
after returning from his stay in a big London Hospital, it took some time
before he got back to walking in a fairly normal way. What I recall about that
time is how upbeat he was about the future and how he took up walking
again but not as vigorously as he had been doing, before he became unwell.
On his fifth anniversary, I thank God for the privilege of knowing a man of
charisma, courage and strong faith. (Fr. Denis O’Mahony

Late Ger Kennelly
A cloud of sadness descended over the community at the weekend after the unexpected death of Ger Kennelly of Clounamon.
A native of Woodford Listowel Ger was a man of kind and genial nature and was held in the highest regard by everyone who knew him .
Ger met the love of his life Evelyn O Gorman at Bernie’s night club in Ballybunion back in 1981 and it was love at first sight and their love blossomed from the word go and were destined to take the same path in life.
The happy couple were like two peas in a pod as they done everything together.
When they married they came to live in Clounamon and Ger made friends quickly in his new environment and after not very long his list of neighbours were growing at a rapid race.
A hard working man all his life he was a great provider for his family and was delighted that his 3 children done so well for themselves in life.
He excelled at roofing and carpentry and was a man who could turn his hand to any kind of work and he was a gifted tradesman who people relied on his honest dealings with people.
From electrics and plumbing he was a jack of all trades and always done an honest day’s work to the best of his ability and he built a trusted a relationship with the many people that used his services.
A man of gregarious nature he loved to have a chat and a bit of banter and anyone who struck a conversation with him left with a smile in their faces.
He never had a bad word to say about anyone and always had the welfare of people close to hi sheart.
He was a wonderful husband, Dad and grand Dad and took great pride in his family
His pride and joy was his Red Ferguson Tractor who brought his crop of turf home and used in in many other capacities as he had an abiding passion for vintage tractors and if there was any fund raising venture in the North Kerry area Ger was always at hand to offer his services and took part in many fund raisers on his familiar mode of transport.
Ger had been in good health up to recent times and he passed away unexpectedly after a few days in hospital at the age of 60 which was heart - breaking for his wife Evelyn and his family.
He packed a lot into the 60 years he spent in this life but he would have expected to have lasted much longer but sadly he was called away far too soon with so much left to live for.
Anyone who chatted about his death had only the very best of things to say about him which clearly demonstrated just what a very likeable person his was.
His sad passing will create a major void in the lives of the people who knew him but they can be comforted in the great life he lived and the the big legacy of fond an cherished memories he left behind.
Huge and widely representative congregations, turned out on Wednesday evening for the removal of his remains from Lyons Funeral Home, Derry Listowel to St John Church in Ballybunion.
The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Padraig Kenney a cousin of the deceased.
At the offatery members of the Kennelly family brought tokens to the altar to signify the part that they played in his life.
They included A Radio to show how he enjoyed listening to Radio Kerry, a Family Photo to show that he was dedicated to his family,
A Hammer to show all the work he done in his trade, A Tractor which showed his love of Vintage tractors.
A Kerry jersey to show how much he enjoyed attending Kerry matches,
Following the ceremony Ger was laid to rest at the adjoining St John’s cemetery.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Evelyn, sons Gerard and Timmy, daughter Eva and all other family members and relatives.

John had a profound influence on me. I have overwhelmingly positive memories of training in Furbo boxing and representing the club as a teenager and young adult. John taught me life lessons through boxing. He was a coach, a mentor and a friend. He lived every moment of the bout when in the corner. He instilled a confidence in me and a desire to win in all aspects of life.My brother Darren and I, thoroughly enjoyed John's company. Furbo boxing club was a sanctuary for us for a number of years. A place to learn the beautiful sport, to put in solid work and to build character. I am forever grateful to John for his dedication to us and to the sport. John was a great man and a Galway boxing legend. RIP John. Sincere condolences to Vera and the family.

3rd Sunday of Easter, 18th April, 2021.
Dear Parishioner,
The 7th of April issue of the Kerryman newspaper
carried a photograph of Fr. Tomás Ó Hiceadha, (Tom Hickey) receiving his second Covid 19 vaccination from Dr. Fiona Kavanagh. The caption underneath the photograph stated that he became the first person to be fully vaccinated at Ionad Leighis an Daingin. Sadly, this week’s Kerry-man had another photograph of the oldest priest in our diocese. A large headline above the photograph stated ‘Great talent leaves the stage with death of Fr. Hickey’ and an article on the ‘West Kerry Community News’ section filled almost a halfpage. Fr. Hickey died last Monday at the age of 96 – three months from his 97th birthday.
Fr. ‘Tom’s’ funeral Mass in Ballyferriter Church, last Thursday, was cel-ebrated by Fr. Pat Ahern, with a few of the local priests and Bishop Ray Browne. It was fitting that Fr. Pat should have been the main celebrant because both men had wonderful artistic talent – Fr. Pat in the area of music, and Fr. Tom in drama. Long before I knew Fr. Tom Hickey and, before I had thoughts of becoming a priest, I had known of his fame as a priest who, in the parish where he was a curate, was involved in getting parishioners to take part in plays and to win prizes in drama festivals, including the Annual National Amateur Drama finals in Athlone. I can recall seeing that information in the daily newspaper, when I was a student in St. Brendan’s College, Killarney.
Some years ago, a book on drama was reviewed by Fr. Tom in the Fur-row magazine. I recall that he began the review by mentioning that some time before that, he had been invited to lead a workshop on dra-ma production one Saturday, somewhere in Dublin. He wrote that he was surprised to see such a big number in attendance. When the group returned after lunch, it was much smaller than it had been in the morn-ing. Many had left because they thought they were going to see the TV character from the series of the Riordans, Benjy, played by a man called Tom Hickey! When I was appointed curate in Duagh Parish in 1976, Fr. Tom wished me well and said ‘You are now in the parish with the greatest cow population in the diocese.’ I thought he was ‘joking’ about the people, but I discovered later that the cow numbers were big in the parish.
Ar dheis láimh Dé go raibh a anam uasal. (Fr. Denis O’Mahony)

It was great sadness to hear the passing of my Uncle Fr Tom. I have fantastic memories as a young boy of Fr Tom returning to Lissereen for his summer holidays. Everyday was an adventure when he was at home as we travelled the highways and byways of Kerry and beyond visiting cousins relations and acquaintances . Everywhere we visited we were welcomed with open arms , we sang we danced played cards went to football and hurling matches . Fr Tom had a great sense of fun, a larger than life character. I would like think he is sitting down tonight with his siblings who have passed on, playing a game of 31 and rounding it all off with his party piece The Homes of Donegal.
Rest in Peace Fr Tom.

Dear Fr Tom, from the day you came to meet me at our farm in August 1981 that day l will never forget l was a first time mum and l was not in a happy place ,may l set the scene, l had met Fr Tom when in the depths of winter l had babies nappies flapping on the line and all was well until the line broke and my beautiful white nappies were no longer white, Fr Tom appeared from nowhere to offer me a blessing, blessing our little family myself and Paul and the blessed washing line, thank you for visiting when you where most needed, enjoying your videos of your trips to Ireland, and you falling asleep after a hearty meal, with us not knowing who the people were in the video, but the beautiful Irish scenery which you were very proud of your Irish heritage. The day you came for care was the day l could repay you for all you did in our community and for my family, from giving our first born a mass of the angels service as young parents who were having to face this tragedy you helped us to no end. l am a proud aged care nurse and will miss you, thank you for my blessing on Friday morning and thank you form the Morello's

Biddy Early outlived both her parents, four of her husbands, and probably her son. She died April 22, 1874 and was buried in Feakle churchyard.
Although the Church tried to erase folklore and fairy traditions that were seen as unholy, this was an impossible task when many believed in folk cures and the work of wise women and men.

Growing up with Gay Byrne
By Domhnall de Barra
The passing of Gay Byrne last week brought to mind the great changes this country went through during his broadcasting lifetime. He was, without doubt, a master of his profession and the many tributes paid to him by colleagues and the general public were well deserved.
To say that we grew up with him is not far from the truth because when RTE began, back in the middle of the last century, Ireland, and rural Ireland in particular, was in a very different place. I remember the first TV we got. It was in black and white and was only on for a few hours a day at the beginning. It wasn’t that new to me because I had been to England during the school holidays and had seen my aunt Nora’s television but the rest of my family were enthralled by it. It was a bit like the BBC at the time with very stern looking newscasters and continuity personnel speaking in very “proper” voices. These became the first real celebrities and people like Charles Mitchell were looked up to around the country. The content of the programmes was harmless, to say the least, with great emphasis on a holy Catholic Ireland. The influence of the church could be seen even in organisations like the GAA. At hurling finals the ball would be thrown in by the Archbishop. And “Faith of our Fathers” was also sung. At that time, in this area, 99% of the people were Roman Catholic and went to church for Mass on Sundays. Indeed it was a big occasion when people dressed in their best clothes and men had a shave, probably the only one of the week. The priest had his back turned to the congregation and said the Mass in Latin. We couldn’t understand a word of what was being said but some people had missals which had the Mass in English. The size of the missal was in direct proportion to the affluence and social standing of the owner. I got a small one that didn’t look too impressive but it had all the translations in it and that did the job for me. Women had to have their heads covered and men the opposite. They also sat in different sides of the church. We called them the men’s aisle and the women’s aisle and though there was no hard and fast rule about it, it was a brave man who would venture into the wrong side.
Priests had a lot of power in those days and some of them frightened the people with sermons about sins and occasions of sin that would land them in the burning fires of hell forever if they weren’t careful. Sins of the flesh were particularly frowned upon to such an extent that anything to do with physical contact, even between husband and wife, could not be spoken of. Women would even be ashamed when they became pregnant and try to hide the fact for as long as possible and these were the married ones! The poor unfortunates who became pregnant outside of wedlock were thought to bring shame on the family and many of them were packed off to convents and workhouses. If normal sex wasn’t spoken about there certainly was no mention of homosexuality. Not only was it a terrible sin but it was also a crime at the time so those who, through no fault of their own, were born that way had to be very careful and most of them lived a life of misery and denial.
There was also a lot of poverty around at the time. The years following World War 2 were lean ones with very little industry in the country which was denuded by emigration. This was the country that RTE came into and for a while it mirrored the state of the nation. Then came the Late Late show and, for the first time, topics that up to then were taboo, were suddenly being discussed. By today’s standards they were harmless enough but were a huge breakthrough at the time. Some people didn’t like it, one politician famously said that there was no sex in Ireland until the Late Late Show, but the vast majority of those who watched religiously every week were delighted with this newfound freedom of expression.
People were also getting more educated due to the foresight of a Limerick politician, Donagh O’Malley who made secondary education free for everyone. The world was changing fast and Ireland had to change with it. Once the change started there was no stopping it and now we are one of the most liberal nations in the world. Many would contend that we have gone too far but isn’t better to be like that than to condemn pregnant girls to slavery and deprive them of their babies and cause mental anguish and persecution to those of us with a different sexual persuasion.?
Yes, Gay Byrne was king of the airways, a product of his time who wasn’t afraid to push the agenda that bit further all the time and he brought many hours of happiness and enlightenment to his audience.
The week of his passing was filled with tributes to him but, as I was listening to it all I thought; why on earth did they not do that while he was still alive? It wasn’t as if he died suddenly, he was ill for quite some time, so there was ample time to arrange a programme in his honour. We shouldn’t have to wait until people are dead to speak well of them, that is why a programme like Eamon Andrews’ “This is your Life” was so important. It gave people a chance to celebrate the life and times of people who mattered while they were able to appreciate it. It is too late when they are gone.

Chrissie Nolan Rest In Peace by Fr Pat Moore
“When night stirred at sea
and the fire brought a crowd in,
They say her beauty
Was music in mouth
And few in the candle light
thought her too proud
For the house of the planter
is known by the trees
Men that had seen her
drank deep and were silent,
The women were speaking
Where ever she went,
As a bell that is rung
Or a wonder told shyly
And O she was the Sunday in every week”
I associate Chrissie with Austin Clarkes poem anytime I hear of read it. She was no “Planter's Daughter” but her kindness, down to earthiness, approachability and lyrical presence made “her beauty music in mouth”. We know that, “men that had seen her drank deep and were silent”. In many situations she was like “a bell that was rung” and she saw so much “as wonder told shyly”. She was for so many people, in so many situations, awkward and awesome; Chrissie was the “Sunday in every week”.
I first met her through a comedy of errors in Rome. After deciding, not to live in Italy, a Kerry woman living in Feasoli outside Florence told her there was an Athea man in the Irish College in Rome. “I'm not from Athea” I told Chrissie, “I'm from Asdee”. “Better still” she said only Schralam between us. In Italy I watched the way she drew the connections between rural life and folk culture in North Kerry and the self same roots of civilization in Italy – for she saw everyone of us as connected. Presence, humour, stories, music, food, our Christian heritage in all its glorious manifestations all illuminated her life as she ploughed the furrow of education. She saw education, in the Latin sense of the word, meaning that you draw out what's already within the person in a safe and imaginative environment.
Let me bring you to a school in Glencar in South Kerry that was threatened for closure by the department she worked for. Trying to save it she asked a pupil that had a younger brother at home when he was born? “At this side of Puck!” he answered. In her report she told the department it would be “linguistic homicide” to close such an academy in a Kerry Valley. No teacher felt anything other than inspired by her for she saw the classroom as not only a place for a knowledge but a place for true learning.
She further realised that we are all reared around the kitchen table and that it takes a village, a community to rear a child or anyone of us. The community here in Ballydonoghue with it's rich cultural literary and musical tradition inspired Chrissie and she supported it as best she could. She valued what she knew and loved here wherever she went in the County or in the Country.
And I remember the frightenly lonely days and months Chrissie was going through when she realised something wasn't quiet right with her awareness and her memory. She was trying to remember with a neighbour how to turn the heel of a sock; a task all primary school girls knew and she could sing. “Isn't it frightening” she said “that I cant remember that”. And her world was plunged into the cruel world of Alzheimer's. Can I say to her family that ye showed the depth of your love for Chrissie by how ye coped with this. She wanted for nothing as you accompanied her into that numbing world of absence of presence. Your silent witnessing impressed us all as you witnessed the slow undoing of a loved one. Yet even in her silence she had a presence.
And we gather today broken open by the mystery of someone that slowly slipped away from us. She was once a presence as real as Cnoc an Fhomhair, the hill that she was born in the shade of. She witnessed to her Christian Faith by attendance here as St Teresa's, by acts of kindness by selfless dedication to just norms – “you give everyone a fair chance”.
Life often shocked, disappointed and saddened Chrissie but she always moved every situation towards the light with kindness and compassion, for she was, “The Sunday is every week”. She was so wholesome, in touch with everything in nature and with everyone.
“Aisling ghear do dhearcas féin
ar leaba me go lagbhrioch”
When any of us were “ lagbhrioch” - broken spirited, Chrissies beauty and compassion showed us a way forward.

Sadness and Gloom over North Kerry
December 29th, 2015
by Jack Hennessy
"It is with sadness and with the deepest of regret that the North Kerry Football Board, its officers, delegates, our sixteen clubs and all associated with the Board has unfortunately come to learn of the passing of two of our greatest Gaels at this time. The news filtered through on Monday evening December 28th of the passing of our late and esteemed chairman Der O' Connor R.I.P. of Ballinoe Tarbert. Despite having been ill for a period of time, little did we think that his final call would come so soon. Der served in umpteen capacities during his life as an officer both with his beloved Tarbert Club and also at District Board level in North Kerry. A man that was always treated in the highest regard, he brought humour understanding and friendliness in everything he done in his capacity as an officer at either Club or District level. If the term "an Officer and a gentleman" was to be used correctly, then Der would definitely be a worthy recipient of the phrase. He began his lead into North Kerry affairs in the early 70's by representing his club as a delegate to the board and St Patrick's hall was the venue for many a lively debate in those days. In the intervening years he served in various capacities within the club before becoming chairman in the early 80's. But as an officer in North Kerry Board his term did not begin until 1996 when he was appointed Development Officer taking over from Robert Barry (St Senans). He served in this position until the end of 1998.
The position of Chairman became vacant on the passing of the late Bernard O' Callaghan R.I.P. and prior to the 1999 Annual Convention Der decided to contest the position with the outgoing Vice Chairman John Stack. The result swinging in Der's favour, and so began his seven years at the helm of this Board which ended in January 2006. During that time there were many changes implemented, and he always ruled fairly in every issue. Indeed looking back now little did we think that within ten years we would lose such a man. He was instrumental in acquiring sponsorship for so many of our competitions and while he brought several new business people on board he also dug deep in his own pocket and sponsored the Junior Championship. He was fully supportive of the Team of the Championship which was introduced in 1999 and sponsored by the late Maurice Fitzgerald R.I.P. of the Lanterns Hotel in Tarbert. Today his daughter Una and her husband Greg continue that sponsorship as they are kind sponsors of The McMunn's sponsored North Kerry Senior Championship, while South of Ireland Waste Management sponsor the Intermediate competition. To those of us who had the pleasure of serving with him on the board and to the huge amount of friends he had all over the Country all we can say at this time is that "It was our pleasure to have known and served with him" and on behalf of all of us we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his grieving family, relatives and wide circle of friends at this particular sad time.

Shortly afterwards we were again shocked beyond all belief on learning of the news of the passing of the young Moyvane football star Patrick (Paddy) Curtin R.I.P. As everybody was aware Paddy as he was more affectionately known as was involved in a serious accident while working in Guatemala shortly before Christmas. He was transferred from a Hospital in Guatemala to Miami over Christmas, but unfortunately sipped away from us on Monday 28th December. The 26 year old who last played for Moyvane in the North Kerry League Div. 2 Final in Ballylongford where they defeated Asdee in September of this year (2015), little knowing that this would be the last time he would don the Green and Gold Jersey. The Moyvane clubman represented his County in both Minor (2006/07), Under 21 (2009/10) Junior (2009) and made his Senior Championship debut against Tipperary in 2012 having made his National League debut earlier that year against Dublin. At Senior County Level Patrick made ten league and Six Championship appearances his last game with Kerry in 2013 against Cavan in Croke Park. To his heartbroken parents and family, his relatives and friends, his team mates and all in the Moyvane Club, his work colleagues and to all of us that had the pleasure of watching him and knowing him we extend our deepest sympathies at this sad and lonely time. Rev. Patrick Daly, assistant pastor of St. John's Catholic church at Hyde Park, has been identified with this young and growing parish since he came a newly ordained priest from his native Ireland. Father Daly was born in County Kerry, Ireland, August 21, 1888, son of Mortimer and Mary (Relihan) Daly. His father was born in County Kerry in 1858, and spent his active career as a farmer. He was the father of seven children. Two of his brothers, uncles of Rev. Patrick Daly, were also priests, Father John Daly, pastor of St. Brendan's Church at Elkins, West Virginia, and Father Patrick Daly, who recently died and was pastor of St. Joseph's Church at Longsight, Manchester, England. Father Daly attended the national schools of County Kerry to the age of fourteen. He was then in St. Michael's College at Listowel a year, then in St. Brendan's Seminary at Killarney, from which he graduated after a three year's course. He studied philosophy and theology in St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny and was ordained there June 13, 1915. Father Patrick Daly also has a brother, Mortimer, who will receive ordination as a priest in June, 1919. Father Patrick Daly immediately set out for the United States and since arriving has been assistant pastor of St. John's parish at Hyde Park. The church was established in 1908, and the church home was dedicated in January, 1910, by the late Bishop Conaty. Father Daly was at first assistant to Father Jerry Burke, pastor of St. John's, and is now assistant to Father Leo G. Garsse. Father Daly is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Fr Patrick O Donoghue
of the most recently established parishes of the Catholic church in Los Angeles is the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, of which Father O'Donoghue is the second and present pastor.
This parish was established by the late Bishop Conaty in June, 1915. In absence of a regular church edifice the first mass was said at the Temple Street Car Barn at the corner of Edgeware and Temple streets. The present church occupies ground at the corner of Union and Court streets. The cornerstone of the edifice was laid June 17, 1916, and the church was dedicated in November, 1917, by Bishop Conaty. A rectory was also built in the spring of 1917, and a parish hall and parish school complete the group of buildings and the services of the parish. The
growth of the parish has been slow but steady, beginning with twenty families, and there are now three hundred and fifty families constituting the parish. Father George Donahoe was pastor from the establishment of the church until March, 1918, when he was transferred to the Church of Sacred Heart.
Rev. Patrick O'Donoghue, the present pastor, was born in County Kerry, Ireland, August 4, 1885, a son of Daniel and Margaret (Kennelly) O'Donoghue. His early education was acquired in the National schools of Ireland until fourteen, and then being destined for the priesthood he studied at St. Michael's College at Listowel in County Kerry, graduating in 1902, and took his theological work in St. Patrick's College at Carlow. He was ordained priest June 14, 1908, by Bishop Foley.
Practically all his active career of ten years has been spent in the Los Angeles Diocese. For several years he was assistant pastor of St. Patrick's church at Los Angeles, and in 1915 was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's church at Bakersfield, California, St. Mary's church at Taft, and St. Brendan's church at Maricopa. He was burdened with the responsibilities of these three missions until February, 1918, when he was inducted into his present duties.
MARY ROSE KENNELLY DIED ON 7TH MAY 2014
Since her parents and Sister Nora died she always considered them to be near her in her journey through life.
She supported all local events including, the church, shops and hairdressers.
Mary Rose attended mass and the Eucharistic adoration in Knockanure as often as possible - Went to Knock with local group almost every year and went to Lourdes last October.
She said the Rosary every evening and had a host of devotional tapes and hymns.
She was a great supporter of missionary magazines /charities for years and was a promoter of the word magazines.
The community centre was very dear to her and she was delighted to attend their monthly social day - also attended the centre in Glin.
Only a few weeks ago Mary Rose visited the opening day at
Halloran’s Nursery in Althea where she got some plants for the family grave - all around her house plants of every description are planted - Feeding birds in the gardens was one of her favorite hobbies.
She would sit at the window and watch them feed.
Mary Rose always maintained the homestead and there was a welcome for every visitor- with cups of tea - this was a hallmark of her personality.
She made sure to visit her Aunt and friends in the nursing home in Tralee and Listowel. There was great sadness when they heard Mary Rose was sick and could not believe that she was in hospital bed.
We all have our own personal memories of Mary Rose and it would be nice if people shared their own memories of Mary Rose

Dan Keane 2005
The bells of St. Bartholomew's rang in the morning air,
The mission bells were pealing to summon souls to prayer,
Three rebel sons of Ireland their fear of danger shed,
To kneel before God's altar and receive eternal bread.
Paddy Walsh and Paddy Dalton and their companion Dee,
Because they loved their Motherland they strove to set her free,
They little knew that morning what they shortly would endure,
As they took the road towards their last abode in the Valley of Knockanure.
The sun of May was rising, casting shadows to the west,
On a bridge in Gortagleanna those men sat down to rest,
They chatted there with Jerry Lyons their comrade from duagh.
But, alas! Too late to make escape when the Black and Tans they saw,
From lorries three in fiendish glee the Tans did leap and roar
With rifle-butt, with fist and foot they beat their prisoners sore,
Nought could they gain, the poured in vain rough language and impure,
No fear they showed in their last abode in the Valley of Knockanure.
They put them in the lorries and travelled towards Athea,
But there, again, they turned west and went the other way
Beyond the Gortgleanna cross a fort came into view
The Black and Tans hatched evil plans in a field behind Lisroe.
Again, their captives gave their names but nothing more they'd tell
Within their breasts beat hearts as brave as e'er for Ireland fell,
The tans foul breath or threats of death could nothing more procure,
For valour glowed in their last abode in the Valley of Knockanure.
With love undying they stood in line, clasped hands and said goodbye,
They shouted prayers for freedom when they knew they were to die.
No order had been given, they fired in random glee,
One dared to dash for freedom; a rebel called Con Dee.
In that lonely dell three comrades fell their tortures were all o'er,
In tale and song they still live on and will for evermore.
They met their God on their own green sod with stainless souls and pure
And their red blood flowed in their last abode in the Valley of Knockanure.
The Tans were raging furious as Dee kept gaining ground,
The hills around re-echoed the rapid rifle sound.
Though wounded early in the chase he held both head and feet
On towards the wild wide mountain where green and purple meet.
He prayed to those he left in death that they his life would spare, *
God bless the hands that found him and took him in their care.
They nursed the worn weary limbs that bore him o'er the moor
As he fearless strode from death's abode in the Valley of Knockanure.
The bell of St. Bartholomew's still speaks in solemn tone,
The Patriot hearts who gave their all are still in memory known.
The graves that hold their fleshless bones a veil o'er life has drawn
But their souls have flown to that bright home of God's eternal dawn.
May they look down from Heaven's crown on the land they died to save,
God grant that we might ever be as fearless and as brave.
There's a cross to tell where those men fell our freedom to secure
And the sun of May shines bright today o'er the Valley of Knockanure.

CIRCULAR LETTER TO THE ARCHBISHOPS AND BISHOPS OF IRELAND
Quebec, the 9th June 1847.
"MY LORD AND VENERABLE BROTHER--The voice of religion and humanity imposes on me the sacred and imperative duty of exposing to your Lordship the dismal fate that awaits thousands of the unfortunate children of Ireland who come to seek in Canada an asylum from the countless evils afflicting them in their native land.
Already a considerable number of vessels overloaded with emigrants from Ireland have arrived in the waters ot the St. Lawrence. During the passage many of them weakened beforehand by misery and starvation, have contracted fatal diseases, and for the greater part have thus become victims of an untimely death.
This was but the natural result of their precarious situation. Crowded in the holds of the vessels, unable to strictly adhere to the rules of cleanliness, breathing constantly a putrid atmosphere, and relying frequently for nourishment upon insufficient and very bad provisions, it was morally impossible to escape safe and sound from so many causes of destruction.
Anchoring at Grosse-Isle, about 30 miles below Quebec, where they are compelled to perform a quarantine, the transatlantic vessels were most commonly infected with sick and dying emigrants. Last week at that station more than 2,000 patients, of whom scarcely more than half could find shelter on the island. The others were left in the holds of their respective vessels, in some cases abandoned by their own friends, spreading contagion among the other healthy passengers who were confined in the vessels, and exhibiting the heartrending spectacle of a morality three times greater than what prevailed ashore.
Our provincial government has undoubtedly manifested the greatest zeal and most parental anxiety in assisting the unhappy emigrants, but yet could not in due time employ the requisite precautions to meet their manifold wants. The consequence is, that vast numbers sighed, and do still sigh, in vain after the charitable care so necessary to the preservation of human life.
Already more than a thousand human beings have been consigned to their eternal rest in the Catholic cemetery, precursors of thousands of others who will rejoin them if the stream of emigration from Ireland continues to flow with the same abundance.
One Catholic clergyman alone, in ordinary circumstances, ministered to the spiritual wants of the quarantine station; but this year the services of even seven at a time have been indispensably required to afford to the dying emigrants the last rites and consolations of their cherished religion. Two of these gentlemen are actually lying on the bed of sickness, from the extreme fatigues they have undergone and the fever they have contracted in visiting the infected vessels and the hospitals on the island to accomplish the duties of their sacred ministry, and gladden the last moments of the Irish emigrant.
The details we receive of the scenes of horror and desolation of which the chaplains are daily and ocular witnesses, almost stagger belief and baffle description; most despairingly and immeasurably do they affect us, as the available means are totally inadequate to apply an effectual remedy to such awful calamities.
Many ot the more fortunate emigrants who escape from Grosse-Isle in good health, pay tribute to the prevailing diseases at Quebec or Montreal, and overcrowd the hospitals of these two cities, where temporary buildings are erected for the reception of a greater number, without still affording sufficient accommodation.
Amid the present confusion, we have had neither leisure nor opportunity to ascertain the number of orphans and families that are thrown for support on public charity.
I deem it necessary to mention that those who have escaped from the fatal influence of disease, are far from realizing on their arrival here, the ardent hopes they so fondly cherished of meeting with unspeakable comfort and prosperity on the banks of the St. Lawrence. To attain so desireable an end, they should possess means which the greater number have not, and which cannot be rendered available and efficacious, unless emigration be conducted on a more diminished scale.
I submit these facts to your consideration, that your lordship may use every endeavor to dissuade your diocesans from emigrating in such numbers to Canada, where they will but too often meet with either a premature death, or a fate as deplorable as the heartrending condition under which they groan in their unhappy country. Your lordship will thus open their eyes to their true interests, and prevent the honest, religious, and confiding Irish peasantry from being the victims of speculation and falling into irretrievable errors and irreparable calamities.
I have the honor to remain, my lord and venerable brother, with sentiments of profound respect, your most humble and obedient servant."

DIGGIN
my Diggin family name. Thomas Stephen Diggin was my grandfather, born in CO, Kerry in 1898 or 1902, we're not really sure on that. Thomas went by the name of Stephen Diggins when he came here in 1925. He went to live with his uncle Eugene McCarhty in Columbus Ohio. My grandfathers parents are Michael Diggin and Mary McCarthy Diggin. Thomas had a lot of brothers and sisters, but all that we know of are Margaret, Ned and Martin. Thomas married my grandmother Nora Cronin sometime in 1933 Chicago. My grandfather died in 1939. Margaret married Edmond Flaherty. Don't know much on them, but they still have family in Columbus. Anything? Please let me know. Bye, Mare
Doherty
Moyvane
Kate (or Catherine) Doherty was called in Religion "Sister Mary Austin Joseph of the Sacred Heart" entering the convent on 16 February 1871, took the habit of the congregation on 15 September 1871, and made her profession on 16 September 1873.
Ellen Doherty was called in Religion "Sister Mary David Joseph of the Face of Jesus" entering the convent on 23 February 1869, took the habit of the congregation on 14 September 1869, and made her profession on 15 September 1871.
Obviously, the Loreto Sister would not appear in the Presentation Annals, but I assume that Cyril Jane Doherty was Janette, the youngest child of Matt and Ellen.

Donald F. Kennelly
Donald F. Kennelly of Bellevue died Nov. 2, 2000, in Bellevue. He was 79.
Born Oct. 15, 1921, in Camden, N.J., he moved to Washington in 1966 and to Bellevue in 1988. He served in the Army and Air Force, was a World War II Bataan survivor, prisoner of war in Japan and a Purple Heart recipient. After the war, he worked as a steel mill finisher and became a member of the Disabled American Vets.
Survivors include his son, Donald J. Kennelly, of New Orleans; brother, John M. Kennelly, of Kirkland; sister, Catherine Botch, of Bellevue; and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Following the service and reception, the burial will take place at 12:30 p.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
Green's Bellevue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Dr. Cornelius Anthony O'Connor, born on 13th June 1923 at Gortdromasillihy in Moyvane, Co. Kerry and reared on Hoeyfield Farm, Delgany, Co. Wicklow, with his 3 brothers and 3 sisters. At that time he was a Medical G.P. with a practice in Pembroke Dock and although he left in 1963 the family link continues as a cousin, Noleen Evans (nee Finucane) is married to a current practice member. Following illness in 1982 he retired and resided with my youngest sister in Derry. Regrettably, he died on January 17th 2004, aged 80 years
Mother, Jocelyn Marie (Nee Davies-Peck), born in Withington, Manchester in November 1924 and, after her parents divorced, reared in St. Martha's Convent, Rottingdean, Sussex with her brother with whom contact was lost in the 1960's when he emigrated to Australia. Sadly, she died on January 31st 1989 and is buried in Sessiaghoniell, Ballybofey, Co. Donegal.
Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance if he will extend (a) the Feale drainage scheme from Listowel bridge to Abbeyfeale bridge, and (b) the drainage scheme for the Galey river from
Moyvane, Newtownsandes, to the Limerick/Kerry boundary.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance (Mr. Donnellan) Michael Donnellan
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance (Mr. Donnellan): The extensions of the Feale catchment drainage scheme suggested in the question would be so uneconomic that they could not be justified.
Mr. Finucane Mr. Finucane
Mr. Finucane: Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that large tracts of valuable land have been flooded during the month of May of this year? Crops have been destroyed. I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary to carry out a reinvestigation and build some embankment to prevent a recurrence of the flooding.
Mr. Donnellan Mr. Donnellan
186
Mr. Donnellan: I will do so. At the moment, the report is that, to protect [186] those, you would have to get embankments and they would have to be put so far back that, for the sake of the amount of land that would be reclaimed, it would not be worth it. The Minister met a deputation in the matter and got a report and it has been shown to be uneconomic to do so.

Alfred Bessette, commonly known as Brother André, the founder of Montreal's impressive Saint Joseph's Oratory and who was venerated by generations of worshippers who sought healing from him, is about to become the first Quebec-born saint.
Pope Benedict XVI will announce the dates for the canonization of Brother André and five other new saints in an official decree after a meeting of cardinals at the Vatican on Feb. 19.
“It is now a certainty that Brother André will become a saint,” said Father Jean Pelletier, a spokesman for the archdiocese of Quebec City. “When anyone considered for sainthood reaches this stage, that's because it's a sure thing.”
Last October, the Vatican's Theological Commission for the Causes of Saints declared “scientifically unexplainable” at least one of the thousands of healing miracles attributed to Brother André. The Pope recognized the miracle last December, setting the stage for official canonization.
From the small chapel that he built on Mount Royal in 1904, Brother André's perseverance and unshakeable faith in St. Joseph became the driving force that lead to the construction of a grand basilica, which was completed some 30 years after he died in 1937 at the age of 91.
Brother André's compassion towards human suffering and his humble demeanour inspired thousands who came to the chapel believing in his powers.
For the dwindling number of practising Roman Catholics in Quebec, sainthood is the most important recognition. Brother André helped shape the religious beliefs of his generation, and some people hope that, through sainthood, he might help spark a renewal of religious fervour.
