Dictionary of Irish Latin American Biography
O'Connor, Francisco Burdett [Frank] (1791-1871), officer in the Irish Legion of Simón Bolívar's army in Venezuela, later chief of staff to Antonio José de Sucre and minister of war in Bolivia. Francisco Burdett O'Connor was born on 12 June 1791 in Cork City, to a landowning Protestant family from England (originally named Conner), son of Roger O'Connor and Wilhamena Bowen, brother of the MP and Chartist leader Feargus O'Connor (1794-1855), and nephew of Arthur O'Connor (1763-1852), MP and hard-line leader of the United Irishmen, who was deported to France. Frank O'Connor's godfather was Sir Francis Burdett, a baronet and radical member of the English parliament.
In July 1819, the lieutenant-colonel of the Tenth Lancers Francisco Burdett O'Connor boarded the Hannah in Dublin together with 100 officers and 101 men of the Irish Legion in Simón Bolívar's army of independence. The commanding officer of the Tenth Lancers, Colonel William Aylmer, was also second in command of the Irish Legion. They arrived in September 1819 on the island of Margarita off the coast of Venezuela. No preparations had been made to receive them, and hardships were experienced by the men of the Irish Legion suffering the combined effects of the officers' lack of experience, scarce victuals, and deficiency of buildings. Many of the officers died and others refused to remain and returned to Ireland.
In December 1819 the Irish Legion was reorganised and O'Connor was appointed commandant of a regiment formed by mixed forces. In March 1820 the regiment sailed for the mainland to attack the city of Riohacha together with other units. O'Connor's lancers hauled down the Spanish royal ensign and raised in its place their own standard, displaying the harp of Ireland in the centre. When, on 20 March 1820, the enemy attacked the patriots near Laguna Salada, O'Connor's lancers were the only soldiers to rush out of their barracks and storm the royalist forces, forcing them to withdraw in flight. One hundred and seventy soldiers, supported by a company of sharpshooters and one small field gun defeated 1,700 royalists.
As the division was marching out of Riohacha the advance guard walked into an ambush. O'Connor was slightly wounded in the right shoulder when he and his lancers charged upon the enemy with a terrible 'hurrah'. After a mutiny, the Irish Legion was dispatched to Jamaica but some hundred of the lancers whose loyalty O'Connor had managed to retain disembarked again on the mainland and played an important part in the siege of Cartagena and the campaign against Santa Marta.
Bolívar had quickly developed a high regard for the young Irish colonel, whom he appointed chief of staff of the United Army of Liberation in Peru within six months of his joining it from Panama early in 1824. It was O'Connor who kept the patriot forces coordinated and supplied as they manoeuvred under Sucre's command in distinctly hostile territory to bring the last Spanish viceroy in mainland America to battle and defeat. At the battle of Junín in August 1824, O'Connor was chief of staff of the patriot army with 1,500 men against the viceroy's 7,000 troops and nine artillery pieces. The engagement was confined to cavalry charges and ended within an hour with not a single shot fired.
Once established in present-day Bolivia, almost fifteen years later O'Connor rejoined forces with Otto Braun, ex-commander of the grenadiers at the battle of Junín, to aid the Peruvian-Bolivian army. On 24 June 1838 they inflicted a defeat on the invading Argentine army at the battle of Montenegro (known as Cuyambuyo by the Argentines). The battle of Montenegro consolidated the present southwestern border of Bolivia as well as allowing O'Connor to retire from military service and dedicate himself to his farms.
From 1825 O'Connor regularly contributed to El Condor of Chuquisaca (Sucre). In June 1827 he published a proclamation encouraging Irish people to settle in the 'New Erin' of Tarija, 'where the poor of my flesh and blood will be received with open arms.' O'Connor's memoirs were published in 1895 by his grandson Tomás O'Connor d'Arlach with the title Independencia Americana: Recuerdos de Francisco Burdett O'Connor. They are an essential contemporary account of the South American wars of independence.
In 1826 Francisco O'Connor was appointed military governor of Tarija. The congress of Bolivia awarded him 5,000 pesos as a 'liberator', but he himself never used that title despite the rare honour it bestowed. In 1827 he married Francisca Ruyloba, the seventeen-year-old daughter of a family of clerks and priests. Francisco Burdett O'Connor died in Tarija on 5 October 1871 at eighty-one years of age. An atheist while in Ireland, he became a devout Catholic in South America and died with the last rites.
Although only one of his children survived - a daughter, Hercilia - O'Connor d'Arlach is still a recognised family name in southern Bolivia, and one of the provinces of the department of Tarija carries the name of O'Connor.

Funeral services for the Rev. Patrick J. O'Connor, Irish-born pastor of St. James' parish in St. Louis, and a priest widely known for his genial personality and untiring zeal, were held Aug. 4
from the St. James church.
Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter presided in a Solemn Mass of Requiem and gave the last absolution following the Mass, which was preceded by the chanting of the Office of the Dead by the priests' choir. The body lay in state in the church at Tamm and Wade avenues from the previous afternoon, and parishioners kept an all-night, prayerful vigil at the casket.
Father O'Connor died of cancer July 30 in the parish rectory adjoining the church. He had undergone an operation in St. John's hospital in February, and, a few days after the operation, he returned to the rectory where he had remained until his death. He was 69 years of age.
The Rt. Rev. Monsignor George P. Keating, with Rt. Rev. Monsignor Joseph A. McMahon, and the Rev. Joseph A. Bremerich, close friends who had participated in the celebration of Father O'Connor's 40th Anniversary of priesthood in 1947, with the Rev. Anthony A. Palumbo, a boy of St. James' parish, and likewise a close friend of the late pastor, held offices in the funeral services. Monsignor Keating, who is pastor of Sts. Mary and Joseph's parish, was the celebrant of the Mass; Monsignor McMahon, pastor of St. Luke's parish, Richmond Heights, delivered the sermon; and Father Bremerich, pastor of Holy Family parish, St. Louis, served as deacon in the Mass. The office of subdeacon was filled by Father Palumbo, who is pastor of St. Anthony's parish in High Ridge.
Minor Officers
Other officers were; Master of ceremonies, the Rev. George J. Scheer, pastor of Good Shepherd parish, Hillsboro, and former assistant at St. James'; acolytes, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Jakle, assistant pastor of St. Bernadette's parish, Lemay, and former assistant pastor at St. James, and the Rev. Lawrence J. Schieber, assistant pastor of St. Stephen, Protomartyr's parish, St. Louis, and a son of St. James' parish; thurifer, the Rev. Raphael Walsh, O.S. B., a son of the parish; and deacons of honor to the Archbishop; two former assistants of the parish, the Rev. Leo C. Byrne, pastor of Immaculata parish, Richmond Heights; and the Rev. John R. Phelan, pastor of St. Anthony's parish, Sullivan.
Chanters at the Divine Office that preceded the Mass were the Rev. William L. Ebert. Pastor of St. Boniface's parish, St. Louis; and Rev. Arthur V. Peet, assistant pastor of St. Joseph's parish, Clayton. Organist for the priests' choir was the Rev. Gerald J. Sommer, pastor of Immaculate Conception parish, West Alton; and director of the choir was the Rev. Joseph H Anler, administrator of St. James parish, Catawissa.
Born in Kerry County
Father O'Connor was born in Ballbunion, Kerry County, Ireland, Jan. 1, 1883. He studied for the priesthood in St. Patrick's college, Carlow, Ireland, and was ordained there June 9, 1907. Coming to the United States in the year of his ordination he was appointed to St. Edward's parish in St. Louis as an assistant pastor. After five years he was transferred to the St. James parish where he spent the remainder of his life, the years from his appointment until 1918 an assistant pastor, and from 1918 until 1929 as administrator of the parish. He was appointed pastor on Nov. 14, 1929.
Besides building the magnificent 11th century type stone church which was erected in 1927 and consecrated in 1941. Father O'Connor was the builder of a large school, a convent for the Dominican Sisters who teach in the school, and a parish rectory. The rectory which was completed less than a year before Father took sick, serves also as a meeting place for parish social functions.
Surviving Father O'Connor are a brother and three sisters living in Ireland. They are Michael O'Connor, Mrs. Margaret Slat??? and Miss Lil, and Miss Joan O'Connor. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews who live in New York and who came to St. Louis for the funeral.

THE VALLEY OF KNOCKANURE
In memory of Jeremiah Lyons, Patrick Dalton and Patrick Walsh, murdered by Crown Forces
at Gortagleanna, Co. Kerry on 12th May, 1921.
You may sing and speak about Easter Week or the heroes of Ninety-Eight,
Of the Fenian men who roamed the glen in victory or defeat,
Their names are placed on history's page, their memory will endure,
Not a song is sung for our darling sons in the Valley of Knockanure.
Our hero boys they were bold and true, no counsel would they take,
They rambled to a lonely spot where the Black and Tans did wait,
The Republic bold they did uphold though outlawed on the moor,
And side by side they bravely died in the Valley of Knockanure.
There was Walsh and Lyons and Dalton, boys, they were young and in their pride,
In every house in every town they were always side by side,
The Republic bold they did uphold though outlawed on the moor,
And side by side they bravely died in the Valley of Knockanure.
In Gortagleanna's lovely glen, three gallant men took shade,
While in young wheat, full, soft and sweet the summer breezes played,
But 'twas not long till Lyons came on, saying "Time's not mine nor your",
But alas 'twas late and they met their fate in the Valley of Knockanure.
They took them then beside a fence to where the furze did bloom,
Like brothers so they faced the foe for to meet their dreadful doom,
When Dalton spoke his voice it broke with a passion proud and pure,
"For our land we die as we face the sky in the Valley of Knockanure."
'Twas on a neighbouring hillside we listened in calm dismay,
In every house in every town a maiden knelt to pray,
They're closing in around them now with rifle fire so sure,
And Dalton's dead and Lyons is down in the Valley of Knockanure.
But ere the guns could seal his fate Con Dee had broken through,
With a prayer to God he spurned the sod and against the hill he flew,
The bullets tore his flesh in two, yet he cried with passion pure,
"For my comrades' death, revenge I'll get, in the Valley of Knockanure."
There they lay on the hillside clay for the love of Ireland's cause,
Where the cowardly clan of the Black and Tan had showed them England's laws,
No more they'll feel the soft winds steal o'er uplands fair and sure,
For side by side our heroes died in the Valley of Knockanure.
I met with Dalton's mother and she to me did say,
"May God have mercy on his soul who fell in the glen today,
Could I but kiss his cold, cold lips, my aching heart 'twould cure,
And I'd gladly lay him down to rest in the Valley of Knockanure."
The golden sun is setting now behind the Feale and Lee,
The pale, pale moon is rising far out beyond Tralee,
The dismal stars and clouds afar are darkened o'er the moor,
And the banshee cried where our heroes died in the Valley of Knockanure.
Oh, Walsh and Lyons and Dalton brave, although your hearts are clay,
Yet in your stead we have true men yet to guard the gap today,
While grass is found on Ireland's ground your memory will endure,
So God guard and keep the place you sleep and the Valley of Knockanure.

On the 12th of May 1921, a troop of 'Black and Tans' were travelling out from Listowel towards Athea when they arrested 3 young men in Gortaglanna, Knockanure. Prior to this the barracks in
Listowel had been burnt-out and the troops, heavy with drink and bent on seeking revenge decided to execute the young men. One of the men, Dalton, attempted to free himself from captivity but was
thwarted in his efforts by a bullet. Both of the other 2 men were shot on the spot. Today a memorial stands by the roadside where those 3 friends died on that fateful day during Ireland's fight
for Independence.
To: jer
Jer - As far as I know, Johanna Kennelly of Newtownsandes (b. 1843?) married Patrick Moore in Ireland. Their Children were Catherine, Honorah Mary (my great-grandmother), Mary, Michael, and William. Patrick Moore seems to have died in Ireland, whereupon the rest of the family emigrated to the U.S. Here I have conflicting information - it may have been 1872 or 1881, but the former is more likely. The family came through Philadelphia and went to Pittsburgh, PA, later moving to New York, which is where my family's from. Does this sound like your Kennellys? Hi Peter please tell me more about your Moore and Kennelly Family Jer Jeremiah Kennelly > Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 12:53:19 -0600> From: pgorman@library.wisc.edu> Subject: Kennelly's of Newtownsandes Ireland> To: dalyskennelly@hotmail.com>> Hello,>> I'm descended from Johanna Kennelly (Moore) who emigrated in 1881. (Kevin Murphy has kindly donated an old family letter discussing many surnames and locations in Kerry. Even if you are not researching these names you might find the letter interesting. THE KEANE LETTER
Chicago New Years Day (Around 1919)
Hello Timothy - Happy New Year to you all
I was going start in and give you a scolding for being so ignorant in regard to your relatives. You want to know how I am related to Mrs. Murphy, if it was through the Browns. Not at all. Me and Mrs. (Anne, Ann) Murphy could not be any nearer except if we were Brothers and Sisters. Do you know I am half O'Connor. My mothers name was Mary O'Connor and Mrs. Murphy's fathers name was Michael O'Connor and they were brothers and sisters, which leaves me and Mrs. Murphy first cousins. Same as you are to the Keanes of 48th Place or the Keanes of 43rd St. So you and Nellie Murphy (Mrs. [Warren] Hilt ) are first and second cousins. So you see I'd not have to be a Brown to be related to O'Connor of Doumullin being half O'Connor myself.
Now in regards the Browns. There were three differant families, not blood relations but related through marriage. That is the way we all get related. My grandmother on my Father's side was Norah Brown. Her sister Mary Brown, was married to Tim Sullivan of Mullin*, Father of Tim and Humphrey Sullivan in the west side if you remember him. Mrs Hilt will tell you who he was, as they came to Chicago from Washington D.C.
Another sister of Grandmother's, Peggy Brown was married to Hugh O'Conner of Mullin, Father of Ned Hugh, Mike Hugh, and Con Hugh O'Conner 1st cousins of con Coody, Mike Coody and Johnny Coody of Brahig* top of Brahig between Mrs Lyons farm and the O Donaghues.
Another sister of Grandmother's; Betsey or Elizabeth Brown was married to John Connor of Doumullin, Grandfather to the present O'Connors now in Baltimore.
Grandmother had three Brothers; Bill Brown of Scantaglin*, Edmond Brown, Castle Island*, and John Brown, Castle Island.
Ned Brown kept a saloon, grocery, dry goods and drapery in Castle Island for years. Also had some Paddocks back of the townon the banks of the River Maine. He used to come to this every year for about two months and made four thousand dollars on that trip selling books on the train from New York to San Francisco. He knew the line of books to sell, was a smart man was educated for the priesthood.
John Brown kept a saloon and owned several houses in Castle Island years ago. Also had a farm of land at Mullin, 2 farms at Knockdown, but when his first wife died he took to drink and partly lost them all. Grandfather was in one of them farms until he died at Knockdown. Now it is owned by one Tom Jones of Closh* in Cordal** Parish of Coole***.
Another sister of grandmothers was married to Daniel Keefe of Doumultin and his sister was married to one Ned Brown of Mullin. He was no relative of Tim Brown of Doumultin who, was shot at the time of the Rent Manifesto and for whose death Poff and Barrett was hanged. Brown was married to a cousin of mine Kerrins from Krau.
Now I hope you do not have to take a day off or have to buy a pair of glasses or get ____ and ____ for I am not half way yet . You spoke of one old____ who used to come here years ago . I'd say Eddie looked like Ned Brown why S _____ side, her maiden name. Her father was brother to my Keane. She was married to a Mr Casey from Fisies* near Killarney. He was an uncle to Johnnie Casey who used to board with us and was married to Nellie Enright, Jim Enrights sister. She has two daugthers in the westside married and very wealthy. You ought to remember Maggie and Mary Casey. They're cousins of yours but you did not know you did not care. Maggie got hurt some years ago by a suspension bridge downtown and got 37 thousand dollars from the City of Chicago. She has a 15 thousand dollar residence near some park in the west side. Her husbands name is Cullinane a cousin of mine also, from Mount Falvey parish of Scantaglin. Mary is married to a doctor an awful nice young ______ and at Tom Keanes funeral .
Now on my mothers side was Johanna Keane and no relation whatsoever to my fathers Keanes. She had a brother in Tullig near Castle Island. His name was Maurice Keane. His son, Johnnie Keane. He is living on the farm now and a daughter Pegg Keane married to Dan Lawler of Ballnahalla Parish of Coole. Now grand mother had a sister married to Pudd Kearney of Closh, Cordal Parish of Coole. Father of Patrick James and John Kearney of Closh or Cordal, also Peter Kearney school teacher of Kilmurry Parish of Coole. Also mother of Tom Kearney, flour merchant at Castle Island. Maurice Kearney, Ballyroe west of Tralee .
Grandmother had another brother Patrick Keane of Dureen Parish at Scantaglin. His son got massacred a few years agoin Mexico. You remember him, he was here with his little Daugther 3 or 4 years ago. Got murdered when he got back to his ranch in Mexico. He had a sister Mary Keane an old maid supposed to be rich . She was here a couple of times. She is now dead by all accounts. Mrs Hilt will tell you all about cousin Peter and cousin Mary Keane. How the Connors of Curt glas*, or Curmocks as they were called were cousins of mine. Also the Curmocks of Kilkushnane* Parish of Coole. Of course they were not all 1st cousins, but 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The same old Clan any way. The only one around there was nothing to me was Edward Boyle, Lord Ventrys game keeper at Cordal and he came from Tipperary or Hell or someplace years ago. Joe and Geo Twiss knew him well.
Now tell your young friend Mr McCarthy from Brahig to tell you one man in the parish of Scantaglin Coole or Castle Island you are not related to. I have his home in Brahig entirely surrounded all of whom he knows well. I have given you two different families of Keanes in one also three families of Browns in one. You can show this lettter to Mr.Mc Carthy he will understand it better than you as the names of the people and places I have mentioned are more familiar to him.
Tell Father Stack he does not know where the harbor was in Scantaglin. I know well where Pound Road was and so did ever old Ballad Singer and Trick o the Loop Man in Ireland. Many a mutton pie I ate there I wish I had a couple of them now. Castle Island was a great Horse Fair years ago and I suppose it is yet It was a lovely vale running from the top of Coole Headlys bridge to Castlemaine, Ballyseedy, Tralee and into the lower Lake Killarney. surrounded by hills and its three old ancient castles. The center of all surrounding towns. It was 10 miles from Killarney 10 miles from Tralee,10 miles from Listowel, 10 miles Abbeyfeale and 10 miles from Brasna* and 10 miles from King Williamstown.
Tell them boys out there to name another town in Ireland like that for me . Father Stack must be from Brasna at Feales Bridge there were quite a few Stack families there in my time. Ask him if he can kick a football and if he can he is from the Parish of Cloher* or Bally McElliyott* . Tell him I said God bless him. Maybe he thinks a Castle Island man does not talk to God at all. But we were the boys.
Your mother thought I had not enough of a letter to put in this envelope so she wrote another for me to put in it and the way she writes it is like an old horse with a broken leg walked over the paper. I received your gift to me and thanks very much. Seldom I wear them. I am all done up in Military clothes. I got several shirts from the boys. I got 20 pairs of army shirts 3 or 4 pairs of shoes so I am all done up in khaki and more my hair turned quite black, no more gray hairs. I rubbed some sage tea and sulpher to it and it turned black in one week. I got nothing for Christmas only a tin sugar bowl full of tobacco with the picture of a bald headed man on the lid. I did not lose a day in almost two years. I am not checking the cars ever since the year I was sick you got married. I am packing export meats at Armours. Kind of lively work but all activity not running around but in one spot all day for eight hours. We get 51 cents an hour 8 hours a day and sick time. Time and a half for overtime. Double time for Sundays and holidays. Daniel Leo has left the L.R.R.is working in a bank Greenbaum and Sons, La Salle St. Everyone here is well. No sickness this winter and beautiful weather. Everbody is working and lots of money despite the H. C. L.
When you conclude reading this letter do not forget where you started as I am afraid you will not ask me about your ___ more for a long time. You can copy this off and have it printed and made into a Bible like and think of your long tail family.Very lonesome here this Christmas without a little Sup of the Creator. Had one little glass.
Was to a show Saturday night the first in 18 years and the last for 30 years. More the name of the show was "Up in Mabels Room " They are kidding me since about it. I am still waiting for Bill Connors and Jim Enright to die so as to get some of my pipes back they stole from me over the past 20 years.
I am sending you that song "The big boat that First Brought Me Over " Of course I know you can never sing it. It takes me or John McCormick to sing that song and of the two I could sing it better than he could. but my singing days are gone. One x for you 2 xx for Loretta and 3 xxx for Marion Goodbye and God bless you all. Goodbye, write soon.
Your loving Dad,
Dennis Keane
